Neil’s Last Words
There is more about the man
I would like to say
He was a little bit wily
…As in coyote
A little bit hermit
A little bit monk
A little bit seer
A little bit unknown
There in the courtyard
Is the garden he designed
We worked together
To get it done
I think he lingers there
At least his memory
He left his energy
On each rock he touched
And carefully placed
Perhaps he was a hero
Of the cowboy movie…
That played in his head
Enjoyed the fun..
A little bit
Charlie Chaplin
A little bit unknown
And I will tell you this
Days later…
I saw him on the road
As I often did before
He went away…
He turned
Over his shoulder
He smiled and winked
As if to say
Don’t worry about me
I’m OK
After all
It was all in fun
Quite a ride
Wait for me
Maybe I’ll be back
Someday
Note: This was written for dVerse Poetics: Leonard Cohen and Place.
that closure made me smile as well…He left his energy
On each rock he touched…..love this
very nice annell…you captured him nice…i like the similar form as you lay ou tthe parts of him…but then the rather zoom out on the garden…and what he left there…and then seeing him in the after and what he communicated to you…i like…
Thanks Brian. Neil was a friend of mine. A real dear of a man. Annell Livingston HC 74 Box 21860 El Prado, NM 87529

Annell, you are collecting so many poems about Neil. This was another poignant one. Eventually you are going to have to put together a small book. I love the description you gave of him in the first stanza. And I enjoyed learning that he designed the courtyard and worked with you to get it done. I AM wondering where you think he went, why you know he will never return.
I like the way you described him, a bundle of mystery to me like these lines:
A little bit hermit
A little bit monk
A little bit seer
A little bit unknown
Neil was all I say, and so much more! Annell Livingston HC 74 Box 21860 El Prado, NM 87529

Neil sounds like someone I’d like to know. He obviously made quite an impression on you – and on your garden!
Oh, so glad you got to know him and that he remains in some of the stones.
Quite a legacy for Neil. Good to know he left part of himself in that courtyard…
Sounds like a great person to know, love that he’s still there in your garden…love it!
I like the smile..that is who he is perhaps..what he is.. x
