Day 2: November Pad Chapbook Challenge, Poets Aside, Robert Brewer The prompt was to begin with a quote. I have chosen the quote by Henry James, a quote that I live by.
“We work in the dark, we do what we can, we give what we have. Our passion is our doubt, and our passion is our task. All of the rest is the madness of art.” –Henry James
The Work is our Life
Mr. James has it right
As an artist
First is to begin
We have no idea really
We work in the dark
We pick up the pencil
We draw
The brush
We paint
We chip the stone
There is no promise
Of the outcome
We do what we can
That is all we can do
The line goes this way
We follow
We give what we have
We work to the best of our ability
It is a piece we will sign
We will put our names on it
For all times
Today
And long after we cease to be
It is our doubt
That is our passion
We begin and end
With it
And all else is the madness of art
This is all consuming
There is no need of more
A lovely poem from a true artist’s perspective. I love it.
Thanks for your comment.
I tried to comment on your blog, this morning, but it wouldn’t let me. That was such a beautiful write. You are lucky to have lived your dream, if only for a little while. Your write so so wonderful! Annell Livingston HC 74 Box 21860 El Prado, NM 87529

Was wondering where you went. So glad to find you here and into the Challenge. What you say rings clear and true for any creative process. We don’t know, all we can do is follow, and I like the idea that our doubt is our passion. It suggests so much more than just words.

Beautiful words, Annell. I love these words:
We give what we have
We work to the best of our ability
It is a piece we will sign
We will put our names on it
For all times
Today
And long after we cease to be
These words resonate with me. Yes, yes, yes. For today (for ourselves) and after we cease to be, as legacy. The quote you chose..and the poem…are YOU.
I love the grey backdrop..and the exploration of art in the dark..I often write in pencil in the dark…after a while if you look hard enough the dark turns to grey and you can see your pencil scribblings on the page..finding it in the morning is also interesting..hoping you are well..hugs..Jae x
You are amazing. I have heard of artists who drew landscape in the dark. You could do that.
Hope you are well. I am thinking of you often. xoxoxoxoxo Annell Livingston HC 74 Box 21860 El Prado, NM 87529
