For today’s prompt, write a suffering poem. A person or animal in the poem could be suffering. The poem itself could be suffering.

Taos Mountain

 Loyal Companion

A low moan in the distance

Becomes a wail

Then a howl

Hard to hear

Mixes with the wind

Is it injury or death

Does it matter

Sometimes it is in the land

Over time

Suffering becomes memory

Shapes who we are

A universal experience

A loyal companion

  1. Beautiful, I imagine that moan across the valley of Taos Mountain……..must be much history of suffering in the land – its body memory is keening, perhaps. Lovely write, Annell.

    1. Thank you Sherry. I have been told by people who are more sensitive than me, when they walk across the mesa, they can hear the sounds of the people who lived here once. As a church is made sacred by the people who bring what is sacred and leave it there. So also a place is made sacred by the sorrow that is left there.
