Sunday Whirl
Mantala
Along the wall
In shadowed alcove
Past and present meet
Memories flood in
Maps are drawn
Dreams dwindle
Images spin
Invisible becomes visible
Thoughts ricochet
Slowly coming into focus
No longer the curvaceous
Girl you were
An old woman now
With narrow shoulders
Dressed in blue velvet
You hum to yourself
As you draw the lace across your face
The warped fabric of your life
Still strong on the loom
Note: I saw a woman in Santa Fe, faded beauty. She had only one eye, and had smudged mascara on the closed eyelid…dressed in blue velvet. She found her way through the crowd to the old spanish plaza, and sat on the first empty park bench and opened her lunch. Her image went deep into my soul, and I have been trying to find the way to write about her. She was like an old moth, drawn to the light and life of the plaza.

Some lovely imagery all through this. Sad, but very lovely. Humming to herself is something we do almost so absentmindedly. ‘The warped fabric of your life still strong on the loom.’ Beautiful.
I floated to the plaza with this woman, and we ate our lunch together, not speaking….super wordle poem
My favorite stanza. Absolutely spectacular!
“An old woman now
With narrow shoulders
Dressed in blue velvet
You hum to yourself
As you draw the lace across your face
The warped fabric of your life
Still strong on the loom”
Oh my, Annell. This is rich writing. I LOVE the last two lines.
The image that most brought her into focus for me was the narrow shoulders. Thank you for sharing the back story. You painted her well.
Love this Annell. Those last two lines are like a softly released sigh and somehow very satisfying to me. Thank you,
Elizabeth

I enjoyed the listing effect of your opening lines, and felt a real whammy when I reached the crux:
No longer the curvaceous
Girl you were
An old woman now…
(There’s a little typo in curvaceous)
I echo all the others, Annell. This is wonderful.

When I read about your ‘woman’ I think of my MIL, almost ninety – perhaps almost blind in one eye as well, oxygen tank oft on her back (in a pack) – yet still living independently (though in a retirement community). While she only paints her face now with lipstick (the same color forever and a few years…) I can see courage and fortitude in both of these women. Wonderfully wordled.

What a wonderful woman to capture..such a strong presence..it is funny how we only see people at that stage in their life..like it is the only one..some people don’t fit the age they are in..like you can still see their child face..i like how the imperfections seem to give strength..maybe lace is like that..full of holes..but strong and resistant..jae
